Beyond England: Regionalism Reloaded
VENUE TBC
Join Alex Niven and Sarah Weston to discuss the problem of “Englishness” and England. In a discussion ranging across culture and politics, Niven will place modern Englishness as a relatively recent phenomenon emerging alongside the neoliberal advance of Thatcher and Blair — and the temporary defeat of socialism.
Drawing on the themes of his new book New Model Island, Niven will argue for a left revival in a renovated model of culture, constitution and democracy for the British Isles — a dynamic regionalism of a socially-just “dream archipelago”. Put simply: “we need to abandon England and start looking for a replacement.”
