Event Copy from Sound Affects:
Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It’s organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.
Guest speakers:
Dan Synge – A journalist who has written for the arts and lifestyle pages of The Guardian, Financial Times and Independent. He has also worked for magazines such as GQ, Time Out and Esquire, where he wrote about discovering the ‘West Pole’, chased a puma across Dartmoor and played cricket with gangsters in downtown Los Angeles. His new memoir, Whatever Happened to the Teenage Dream?, is about the journey of a shy but creative schoolboy who gets hooked on music (glam, punk, soul and new wave) then starts his own teenage band. With his group Stranger Than Paradise, he then sets out to become the ‘Next Big Thing’ on the 1980’s pop scene. A tragi-comic, roller coaster ride through the euphoric triumphs and near misses of creativity and music making – or indeed life itself.
Gem the Clown – A performer and music lover who blends drag, neo-burlesque, and clowning. With a glittering grin and plenty of rhinestones, Gem’s performances will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions – sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking. She’ll be talking to us about expression, clowning, music, LGBTQIA+ club culture, and everything that goes into her persona as Gem The Clown.
Dr Joy White – Author who will be discussing her new book “Like Lockdown Never Happened: Music and Culture During Covid”.
When everyday life moved online during the Covid-19 lockdowns, music and art took on a renewed importance. Taking a deep dive into the Black popular music and culture that emerged during the pandemic, including Kano’s Newham Talks series, Steve McQueen’s BBC anthology Small Axe, and the Verzuz DJ Battle series, Like Lockdown Never Happened explores the way that Black joy and creative expression sustained us, shaping our experience of lockdown and helping us counter its isolation and restriction. Joy White is the author of Terraformed: Young Black Lives in the Inner City. Her previous work includes Urban Music and Entrepreneurship: Beats, Rhymes and Young People’s Enterprise, one of the first books to foreground the socio-economic significance of grime music. Joy has also written for The Quietus, The Conversation, Trench, Google Arts + Culture, Red Pepper and Prospect.
